Transitioning from Mine to Education

The UMWA Career Centers, Inc. received a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project (RACP) grant from the State of Pennsylvania through Governor Rendell.  The State of the Art Simulated Mine facility is being constructed on the newly acquired 66 acres of property in Prosperity, PA (locally referred to Ruff Creek).

The simulated coal mine is located top left of this photo. Mine Rescue Teams and First Responders used the facility for training and for competitions.  The New Inexperienced Miner program, operated by the UMWA Career Centers, Inc., also utilized the facility for learning such skills as setting posts, escape ways, ventilation and mapping.

When industry needs changed, so did the UMWACC.

“The UMWA Career Centers Inc. has received a Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization “POWER” grant through the Appalachia Regional Commission (ARC).  This grant enables the UMWACC to repurpose the facility and begin training for CDL, Cybersecurity and Advanced Manufacturing as early as Fall 2017.  “
